In the category of “Are we really capable of doing anything new?” Bill Murray in Groundhog Day pretty much nailed it. Likewise, my answer has generally been, not really. I’ve often joked with friends that humans have only like five responses to things. And we only tell a limited number of stories to boot — love themes, war, the hero’s journey. To be human has its limits, therefore, we repeat a lot.
In that vein, I share for your reading enjoyment my new friend and colleague Alex’s recent post about this. He’s an archaeologist from Yorkshire who has written several books on medieval history, so we share lots of common interests. He ponders, as I do, how humans throughout time keep doing the same stuff. Seems as though wherever humans be, there they are, if you get my drift.
Also, take a look at Alex’s new book Forgotten Vikings which was just released in the U.S. this week. And check out the interview we did with him on our podcast. All of this is fresh content, so hey I guess humans can do something new from time to time!
It’s all good stuff I hope you enjoy.
